Black Tourmaline Natural Raw Specimen for Collectors – MNR1209 is a distinctive collector's piece showcasing the natural form of Schorl, the black, iron-rich member of the tourmaline mineral group.

Schorl is one of the most common members of the tourmaline group found in nature. Its colour, ranging from black to dark brownish black, its vitreous lustre and its longitudinally striated prismatic crystal faces make it particularly striking.

Unlike cut or polished stones, natural mineral specimens in their raw form retain the mineral's natural crystal growth, surface texture and geological character. As a result, each Black Tourmaline specimen has a different shape, crystal distribution and natural texture.

Chemical Structure

The idealised chemical formula commonly used for Schorl:

NaFe²⁺₃Al₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH)₄

As ionic substitutions and variations in chemical composition can occur in natural tourmalines, the composition of actual mineral specimens may differ to some extent from the ideal formula.

Natural Formation

Black Tourmaline commonly forms in granitic pegmatites in particular. Crystal aggregates found alongside minerals such as quartz and feldspar are of particular interest to mineral collectors because of their aesthetic appearance.

Well-developed prismatic crystals can clearly display the longitudinal striations characteristic of tourmaline.
